Abstract

<PICT:0675569/III/1> A process for lining container closures with accurately maintained amounts of container sealing compound having a critical temperature-viscosity characteristic includes the steps of circulating a large amount of the compound through a conduit system, releasing a predetermined quantity of sensible heat in the compound, thus regulating the viscosity, discharging a minor fraction only of the circulating compound on to successive closures, and continuously maintaining the volume of the compound being circulated by entraining the make-up quantity of compound in the circulating stream. The sealing compound is solid or pasty when cold, shows a sudden drop in visocity within a critical temperature range (e.g. 100 DEG F-140 DEG F), and a rapid rise in viscosity as the temperature rises above the critical temperature. In the arrangement shown 10 is a gear type positive displacement pump driven by a variable ratio drive connected to an electric motor. The discharge from the pump passes through 11 to an equalizer coil 12 immersed in water tank 13, through conduit 14 to the lining assembly 15 comprising a nozzle 16 and air chamber 17, then through conduit 19 to be discharged at 20. The open end 20 is located close to the apex 21 of the conical bottom 22 of the compound supply tank 23. A grid 24, forming a support for the cold solid compound 29, is composed of crossed small diameter pipes which extend through the base 22 and communicate with the water in tank 13. Alternatively, the grid may be heated electrically. The water in tank 13 is maintained at a temperature close to the lining temperature by electric heating coils, and is circulated through pipes 27, 28 by pumps 26. In operation material 29 is added and, melted by the water, collects at 30. Byepass valve 31, upper byepass valve 32, conveniently a spring loaded relief valve, and flow control valve 33 are opened and pump 10 started. After a minute or two valve 31 is closed and the compound then passes through 11, 12, 14, 34, 32, 19, 22, but when the operating temperature is nearly reached valve 32 is closed so that the compound passes through 17, and after a few more minutes the lining machine is operated to supply the compound to closures 25. The pump 10 supplies a substantial part of the heat required to prepare the compound, while the water melts the compound and compensates for radiation losses. The heat supplied by the pump is dependent upon the speed of pumping which is controlled by the variable drive mechanisms and the back pressure on the system, which is adjusted by valve 33, and with these conditions set the system is largely self regulating. The working data of two examples are given. It is preferred to heat the compound internally by means of a pump because the pump also builds up the pressure to move the material through the circuit, but this heating may also be accomplished by passing the compound through a high frequency electric field, or by means of mechanical or electric oscillators or a pulsing diaphragm.
