Abstract

Clay is mixed with water and a dispersing agent e.g. sodium hexametaphosphate to produce a suspension containing say 20-45 per cent solid matter, and the suspension is classified in successive operations by the application of centrifugal force to produce a material from which particles larger than 10 microns equivalent spherical diameter and smaller than 0.25 microns are absent. A preferred upper limit of particle size is 2-3 microns. A preliminary classification may be employed to remove sand, mica, &c. The removal of the coarse and fine particles may be in either order. The treated material may be treated with a bleaching or flocculating agent or both and dewatered, and the dried material may be pulverized in a grinding mill. The product is suitable for coating paper, and for use in the paint and ceramic industry.
