Abstract
675,319. Adjusting wheel base; tipping vehicles. WEST (BURGESS HILL), Ltd. Dec. 12, 1950 [Jan. 23, 1950; Feb. 21, 1950], Nos. 1775/50 and 4485/50. Classes 108(i) and 108(ii) In a trailer supported on a pair of wheels and adapted to be connected to a vehicle by means of a drawbar, the body of the trailer is provided with a pair of parallel longitudinal members arranged to extend in a longitudinal direction of the trailer and bear upon a corresponding pair of parallel longitudinal members fixed relatively to the wheels and means are provided operable to permit the position of the wheels' to be varied relatively to the body of the trailer in the longitudinal direction of the trailer. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a wheel carriage 4 is provided at each side at each end thereof, with a pair of angle plates 7, 9 which bear against angle irons 11, 12 mounted on longitudinal rails 5 on the underside of the trailer body. A hole 7a or 9a in each angle plate 7 and 9 respectively, registers with one of a series of holes in each angle iron 11 and 12 and in the registering position, the carriage is locked to the trailer body by spring loaded locking members 13. In a modification, Fig. 5, the wheel carriage 4 is provided with side rails 6 which slidably engage similar rails 5 secured to the underside of the trailer body. A spring-loaded bolt 8 extends through each rail 5 and is adapted to engage one of a series of holes 14 in each rail 6. The bolts are disengaged from the rails 6 to facilitate relative movement between the wheels and body, by means of a centrally pivoted lever 10 and links 12. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, in whcih the trailer is adapted to tilt about the axis of the wheels, when braked by rearward movement of a drawbar 3, the angle of tilt of the trailer it determined by a pin 20 which extends through one of a series of holes 21 in a lever 18 pivotally connected to the drawbar and extending through an arcuate slot in a bracket 19 fixed to the trailer body.
