Abstract

674,484. Temperature-variable resistors. DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBERSCHEIDEANSTALT VORM. ROESSLER. June 15, 1950 [July 30, 1949], No. 14978/50. Drawings to Specification. Class 37. A resistance thermometer comprises a platinum wire, constituting the measuring element, supported on the outer surface of a carrier tube, at least the outer surface of which tube consists of high temperature-resistant metal oxides, preferably sintered aluminium oxide. An outer sheath consisting of an insulating covering layer of a high temperatureresistant ceramic material is fused or sintered directly on to the platinum winding and the carrier tube. The carrier tube may be profiled or grooved. The interior of the tube may receive the current lead and may communicate through holes with the surface. The covering layer may consist of glass with a high softening- point, for example glass poor in alkali or rich in alkaline earth or alumina. The glass may be applied to the measuring winding in the form of fibres, twisted threads, glass tow, spun glass, or powder, and then heated to form a covering layer free from air gaps, or it may be applied by spraying. Alternatively the covering layer may consist of a ceramic material sintered or fritted on, such as pure aluminium oxide or aluminium oxide with a small addition of glass powder. In a modification, a metal tube forms the core of the carrier tube and is provided with an insulating covering layer on which the platinum winding is wound, a second covering layer preferably of the same kind then being applied. The carrier body may be formed from oxidation resistant metal compositions comparable in their thermal expansion to the covering layers, for example alloys of iron, nickel, and manganese, or of iron and chromium, in association with glassy covering layers.
