Abstract

673,988. Capacitor measurements. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. Aug. 18, 1950 [Aug. 31, 1949], No. 22597/49. Class 37. In a device for measuring the liquid contents of a tank using a condenser the dielectric of of which is formed partly by the liquid, the weight of the liquid, corrected for variations in density due, e.g. to temperature variations, is indicated. Liquid is pumped continuously by a pump 22 from the tank 18, Fig. 2, containing the liquid to be measured into a tank 17 where the liquid level is maintained constant by a return tube 23. Floating in the liquid in the tank 17 is a reference condenser 1 the dielectric of which is also formed in part by the liquid. Its capacity is of the form A+B(K - 1)/P where A is the condenser capacity when the dielectric is air, B is a constant, K the dielectric constant of the liquid and P its density. The measuring condenser 2 consists of the usual fixed immersion type condensers in parallel, the combined capacity of which is of the form C+D.V(K - 1) where C is the capacity when the dielectric is air, D is a constant and V the liquid volume whose weight is to be measured. A trimming condenser 3, series connected with the reference condenser 1, Fig. 1, across the secondary 7 of a supply transformer 5 is adjusted in value to the constant A so that the rectified current flow through the winding 9 of a ratio meter 9, 10, will, provided the impedance values of the elements concerned are appropriately selected, be proportional to the difference of the capacitances of condensers 1, 3, i.e. to B(K - 1)/P. Similarly the measuring condenser 2 is series connected with a condenser 4, adjusted in value to the constant C, across the transformer secondary 8 so that the rectified differential current flow through the meter winding 10 is proportional to D.V(K- 1). The quotient meter indication is thus proportional to V.P, i.e. the weight of the liquid volume V. The quotient meter may be as described in Specification 561,866.
