Abstract
673,971. Interferometers. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. May 26, 1950 [May 26, 1949], No. 14142/49. Class 97 (i). [Also in Group XIX] A method of testing the accuracy of a surface of a screw thread 6, Fig. 1, comprises setting up the screw 6 in a Michelson type interferometer in place of one of the usual plane surfaces with the axis of the screw parallel to the optical axis and viewing the surface of the thread by reflection from an auxiliary surface 5 which is generally screw shaped in form and so shaped and arranged that a plane image of the screw thread is produced for comparison with the other plane surface 4 of the interferometer. Light from a source 1 passes through a collimating lens 2 and is divided by a half silvered surface 3 into two parts, one being reflected on to the surface 4 and back through the surface 3 and the other passing through the surface 3 to be reflected by the auxiliary surface 5 so as to fall normally on the thread 6 and return by the same path to be reflected by the surface 3. The two parts of the beam are now re-united and brought to a focus at 7 where light fringes will reveal any irregularities of the screw surface. The auxiliary surface may be formed as a number of turns 8 set back conically, Fig. 3. Formulµ defining the screw shapes are given.
