Abstract

673,645. Road-making apparatus; curbs. CLARK, E. S., and ANDRUS, H. L. Dec. 14, 1948, No. 32341/48. Classes 20(ii) and 107. A machine for making a combined curb and gutter for a roadway comprises a motor-driven carriage having mounted thereon a vertically-adjustable screed shaped to form the surface of the curb and gutter, supporting members extending rearwardly from the screed, a hopper supported on the supporting members over the curb and gutter section and a finishing trowel adjustably carried by the supporting members to the rear of the hopper and screed. The main body 1 of the machine carries an engine 2 and gearbox 3 and runs on wheels 4 on rails 5 carried on forms 6 for the surface to be laid. From the body 1 is suspended a screed 7 which is vertically adjustable by screw rods 23 and has sockets 25 co-operating with traction bars 26. The screed is shaped to form the required section (Fig. 3) comprising a gutter part 28 and a curb part 29 and is bent upwardly at 31 at the front edge. In a modification, Fig. 11, the screed 7B is shaped to form curb only on a made-up road. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the screed is shaped to form only a flat side-walk or extension to an existing road. The screed 7 carries supporting side members 19 on the forward end of which is mounted a hopper 8 for concrete fitted with rammers 45 for the concrete or a helical packing conveyer, Fig. 9 (not shown). A plate 47 on the front diverts concrete into the required section. Between the hopper 8 and the screed front is a vibrating strike-off plate 38. Behind the screed and carried on the members 19 is a hopper 9 for fine concrete discharging on to the curb and gutter section. Behind hopper 9 is a trowel 10 shaped in the same form as the screed and vertically adjustable by screw rod 51. The lowest part of the screed is stiffened by a longitudinal hollow member 30. The span of the machine may be altered by moving spacing members 57 to one side or the other of wheels 4. Slipping of wheels 4 may be prevented by fitting rubber rings on the inner sides of the wheel flanges.
