672,959. Controlling aircraft. BLACKBUHS & GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. July 11, 1950 [Sept. 16, 1949], No. 23960/49. Class 4. In an aircraft of the type described in Specification 672,914 in which the sweep-back of the wings is variable and the wing roots lie within shrouds extending symmetrically along cach side of the fuselage within which the wings are pivoted outboard of the fuselage with such shrouds forming part of the wing surfaces in all positions of the wings, each wing carries an auxiliary wing surface wich is housed in a recess in that portion of the trailing edge of the wing is coutained in the shroud when the wing is swept back to an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the fuselage and which is extended to increase the effective wing chord of that portion of the wing when the wing is swung forward to extend substantially normal to the longitudinal axis of the fuselage, Each wing, which is pivoted with respect to the fuselage about a pivot 4, is provided with a movable surface 86 is so arranged that with the wing in the spread position it completes the normal wing plan-form profile. When each wing is moved to the swept back position the inboard trailing edge portion is contained within a shroud 3 and to enable it to occupy this position the surface 86 is automatically moved forward to a. position underlying said inboard trailing edge portion as the wing moves. The surface 86 is mounted at its outboard end on a vertical pivot 87 and its inboard end is slidably supported in an arcuate track 93 and is connected to the shroud by a swinging link 90 so that rearward pivotal movement of the wing causes the inboard end of the surface 86 to move forwardly on the track 93. Each surface 86 may be used as a landing flap by the actuation of a control mechanism which causes it to rotate about an axis extending along its leading edge and further landing flaps are provided on the undersurface of each shroud 3. Provision is made to ensure that identical movements are applied to both wings when they are being moved hydraulically from one position to another.
