Abstract

A water-soluble pyrophosphate or hexametaphosphate is added to a slurry of china clay before, during or after treatment with sodium hydrosulphite but before the clay is recovered by filtration or settling, the weight of the phosphate being 20-100 per cent of that of the hydrosulphite. Alkali metal, and preferably sodium, pyrophosphates and hexametaphosphates are p preferred. The treatment of a 25 per cent clay slurry is referred to.
