In a machine having a vertically moving printing head for marking the top sheet of a pile from which the sheets are successively removed, the pile is supported on a fixed base and the printing head is carried by a vertically movable unit maintained in correct position by means responsive to the pile height. As shown in Fig. 3 the printing unit, slidable on a squaresection post 6, is initially adjusted by rotation (by a handle 42) of a sprocket wheel 37, mounted on the printing unit frame 11, which thereby climbs up a chain 35 connected between a bracket 36 at the top of the post and the base B; it is locked by a spring- loaded pawl 46 (Figs. 3 and 5) which when the printing head is in its lowest position is withdrawn by a pin 50 engaged by a cam 51 on the printing head operating shaft 19, part of the weight of the printing unit thus being used to press the adjustable type members 8, Fig. 1, on the printing head against the top sheet of the pile 5 (the rest of this weight being taken by a spring 43 between arms 44 on the post 6 and 45. on the frame 11). The plunger 9 carrying the printing head 7 is counterbalanced by a spring 64 between arms 65 on the frame 11 and 66 on the head 7, and is reciprocated in bearings 10 in the frame 11 by a link 21 connecting a collar 22 thereon to a crank 20 on the shaft 19, which is continuously rotated through a reduction gear 14 and chain drive 17 by a motor 12 mounted on the frame 11. An arm 24 pivoted at 25 to the frame 11 and connected by a link 27 to a collar 28 on the plunger 9 swings an inking roller 23 between the type members 8 on the retracted head 7 and an ink roll 29 continuously rotated, through a chain drive 33, in a reservoir 30 mounted on the frame 11.
