Abstract

Carbonaceous solids are reacted with an oxidizing gas comprising steam to generate gases containing CO and H2 which are catalytically converted into hydrocarbons and oxygenated derivatives, the pressure used in the gas generation step being approximately the same as that in the synthesis step, both pressures being between 150 and 700, preferably between 300 and 600 p.s.i. The synthesis tail gas may be used for pressurizing in the gas generating stage. The oxidizing gas may be steam with CO2 and/or O2, and gasification conditions are such as to give a ratio of H2 : CO of about 0.7-1.5 : 1. Recycled tail gas or CO2 may be added to the gas generator. The synthesis is preferably effected in a series of stages, with intermediate CO2 scrubbing to give a content of 5-15 per cent in the feed to each reactor, and adjustment of the H2 : CO ratio by treatment with steam and/or CO2 or oxidation with free O2 or a metal oxide. Steam may also be added to prevent carbon formation. Coal gasification may be effected in fluidized operation, crushed coal being fed to lock hoppers which are pressurized by synthesis tail gas and feed the gas generator. Steam and oxygen, preheated to about 1000-1500 DEG F., are fed in proportions so that 5-30 per cent of the carbon gasified is burned to CO2 to maintain a temperature of 1600-2000 DEG F. Product gas is purified from sulphur and CO2 and fed to a synthesis reactor containing iron catalyst which is fluidized, liquid products being recovered, and tail gas treated to reduce CO2 and adjust the H2 : CO ratio prior to feeding it to the next synthesis stage. The coal may be carbonized in a separate zone prior to the gasification stage. Hot solid residue from this stage may be used to preheat the steam by counter-current flow or the steam may contact ash in the gas generator below the distributer plate.
