Abstract
671,049. Bedsteads. COOK, K. M. May 26, 1950. [May 27, 1949] No. 14243/49. Class 52 (ii). An invalid's bed &c. comprises a number of individual transverse mattress sections which are removably supported on a mattress frame, means being also provided for supporting and positioning sanitary conveniences. The mattress frame comprises upper and lower longitudinal members 8, 9 removable sloping pans 10, and end shields 15, the lower members 7 having the usual ends 11 to engage the foot and head ends of a bedstead. The mattress sections each comprise a cushion 1 which is covered with replaceable bed linen &c. and which rests on a metal base 2 having at one end projecting parts furnished with revolvable balls 3 and at the other end with a bracket 4 provided with rollers 5, Fig. 4. The mattress sections are entered from one side of the mattress frame and ride up the pans 10 until the balls 3 enter channels in the upper members 8 on the far side whereupon the near ends of the sections are raised and the rollers 5 engaged with the upper members 8 on the near side. When it is desired to position a sanitary convenience, one or two mattress sections are removed and a device comprising a platform 23, Fig. 5, for the bed pan substituted therefor. When it is desired to move the patient towards the head end, one or more sections at that end are removed, the remaining sections with the patient thereon moved towards said end and the removed sections are then inserted at the foot end. If the head end is to be elevated to form a back rest the upper members 8 are hinged intermediately and a removable support 20 for the upper member inserted adjacent the hinge. In a modification the centre mattress sections may be formed with three transversely aligned cushions and the base 2 is modified so as to permit the intermediate cushion to be lowered and a bed pan on the device, Fig. 5, inserted. For incontinent patients the intermediate cushion may comprise spaced parts supported on a drip pan.
