Abstract

670,574. Making gilled tubes. BROWN FINTUBE CO. Aug. 8, 1947 [March 12, 1940; Feb. 26, 1941], Nos. 22029/47 and 22030/47. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XIII] Welding.-In a method of spotwelding radiator fins to metal tubes each weld is made in rapid succession at such a speed that the tube at the welding point is not softened by conduction of heat from the preceding weld. The combined areas of the welds are substantially equal to the cross-sectional area of the fin and the perimetric length of the welds is equal to the total length of the fin. In a machine, Fig. 7, of known construction for carrying out the method a length of tubing is guided into the machine by rolls 42 with channelshaped fin members positioned by rolls 40. Welding rolls 31, 32 with thyratron control for determining the time and duration of the flow of current effect spot-welding at a speed high enough to prevent softening of the tube. As an example, low carbon steel fins 0.031. inch thick are welded to a tube of similar material with an electrode pressure of about 1000 lbs. and current 12000 amps at 6-8 volts. Each weld is made with a duration of current of 3 cycles to 60 cycle single phase A.C., the current being shut off for a period of 3 cycles between the welds. A tube feed of 18-20 ft. per minute being sufficient to prevent the tube being damaged and deformed. The speed of the tube may vary between 12- 20 ft. per minute with 3-12 welded areas per inch. The spot welds may be spaced apart or may overlap to give a welded area with scalloped edges, the combined areas of the welds being substantially equal to the longitudinal cross-sectional area of the fin flanges and the total perimetric length of said welds exceeding the total length of the flanges.
