Abstract
669,967. Glass fibres. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST. GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. June 2, 1950 [June 2, 1949], No. 13864/50. Class 56. Glass fibres of diameter of the order 0.1,Á to 1.0Á are formed from filaments 4 issuing from nozzles 3 in the furnaces 1 and passed into a high speed high temperature gaseous current issuing from a narrow slot orifice 16. On its way to the current each filament passes through a tube 8; at the entrance side the tubes are arranged side by side all in one line but at the exit sides the tubes are arranged in layers with those in one layer staggered with respect to the adjacent layers, e.g. quincuncially as shown in Fig. 3. The layers of filaments pass over a rotating comb 9 having grooves of a depth to maintain the layers separate. The separate layers are thus presented to the current so that it may act directly on each filament.
