Abstract
669,520. Automatic voltage control systems; exciting dynamo-electric machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 5, 1948 [May 6, 1947], No. 12400/48. Classes 35 and 38 (iv). In a system involving the automatic regulation of the field excitation of an alternator, reduction of field excitation below a predetermined value is prevented by means which change the excitation upon the occurrence of a predetermined value of alternator reactive power. In Fig. 1 the voltage of a three-phase alternator 4 is normally maintained constant by a regulator 9<SP>1</SP>, responsive to alternator voltage through a transformer 10 which controls the energization of a control field 11 of an amplidyne generator 8 which, in turn, controls the energization of a field winding 7 of an exciter 5 energizing alternator field winding 6. An anti-hunt transformer 12 is provided and the regulator may include a positive phase sequence network. The outputs of a potential transformer 16 and a current transformer 21 are so combined that normally the output voltage of a rectifier 26 is greater than or equal to the output voltage of a rectifier 25 and no current flows between the two rectifiers but when the leading reactive power exceeds a predetermined value the output of rectifier 25 is the greater and, by virtue of a resistor 27, current flows through the D.C. winding 28 of a saturable reactor 29 so that the energization of a second control winding 13 of amplidyne 8 which is normally negligible, increases to prevent decrease of alternator excitation below a predetermined value above that at which the alternator would lose synchronism with the system to which it is connected. A reactor 23 ensures that the predetermined value of reactive power at which the lower limit of alternator excitation is reached varies with the true power in the same manner as the reactive power at which the alternator loses synchronism varies with the real power when load impedance is appreciable.
