A paint spray booth is provided with a wet type air cleaner, in which water is used to effect the removal of paint fog from the air, the cleaner being separated from the booth by a vertical partition, over the front of which flows a water curtain, contaminated. air being withdrawn from the stream in two separate streams, one passing over the partition and down through a conduit through which water cascades at the rear side thereof, the other passing below the partition and through the water curtain, baffles causing the two streams to impact transversely into each other to complete the washing action. In the apparatus shown, part of the paint contaminated air from a booth 11 is drawn by a fan 17 over the top of a partition 25 and down through a conduit formed at the back thereof by a baffle 27, the remainder being drawn through an opening 39 between the bottom of the partition and the surface of water held in a tank 19. A small tank 22, open at the top at 38, is mounted along the top of partition 25 and a pump circulates the water from tank 19 to this small tank, the water overflowing from the tank to form a water curtain on the front of the partition and cascading down over the ribbed rear side thereof. The air passing down through the conduit is thus washed and, with entrained water droplets, is deflected by curved baffles 26 and 28 against a baffle 29, impacting transversely into the other stream which has picked up water in passing through the water curtain falling from partition 25 into tank 19. After turbulent mixing and cleaning, the confluent streams are sharply reversed by baffle 28, causing deposition of some water and paint drops, the remainder being removed from the air as it passes to the outlet, by a baffle 30.
