Abstract

669,216. Oil extraction. OIL RECOVERY CORPORATION. Dec. 2, 1949. [Dec. 9, 1948; June 27, 1949; June 30, 1949; July 6, 1949] Nos. 30994/49, 30995/49, 30996/49 and 30997/49. Class 85. A method for the secondary recovery of hydrocarbons from low-pressure non-free-flowing reservoirs in an oil structure by the injection of CO 2 into the structure in amounts readily soluble in the liquids in the structure to modify the oil by reducing the capillary attraction and absorption of the oil within the structure so that it may be removed by secondary recovery means without the introduction of energy to cause the movement. There is introduced into the structure through an inlet well the minimum amount of CO 2 that will provide in the exit fluids of an outlet well a critical CO 2 oil ratio which is less than 1,000ft<SP>3</SP> of CO 2 at N.T.P. to every pound of oil. This CO 2 may be introduced into the structure with petroleum gases that form from 10 to 80 per cent of the mixture or with water or brine and under a pressure of 600 p.s.i., preferably 800 to 1,500 p.s.i., whilst anti-oxidents, reducing compounds and/or catalysts may be added with the CO 2 . When the CO 2 is introduced into the structure as a solution of carbonated water under pressure the solution has a pH value of 3.3. The structure may be flooded with carbonated brine and CO 2 either together or intermittently, with CO 2 before or after brine, at varying pressures provided at one period the pressure to which the CO 2 is subjected is above 600 p.s.i. The CO 2 in the exit fluids is separated therefrom at the surface, repressurised and recirculated through the structure.
