Abstract

668,666. Centrifugal machines. SCHWARZ ENGINEERING CO., Inc. Feb. 6, 1950 [Feb. 14, 1949], No. 3027/50. Class 23 A centrifugal machine for removing air or other gases from liquid comprises a chamber which is maintained under vacuum and intc which the liquid is introduced, the liquid being acted on by centrifugal force and repeatedly subjected during its outward movement tc disruption into droplets. The liquids which can be treated include oil, fruit and vegetable purees and ketchup. Liquid to bE deaerated is supplied to a chamber 2, Fig. 1, by a pump 32 or by gravity through a pipe 28 which discharges it at the centre of a rotor 7. The rotor carries a number of concentric baffle plates, containing perforations of, say, # to 3/32 inch in diameter. In its outward movement, the liquid is repeatedly disrupted into small droplets by the perforations, thus facilitating the release of gas, which is withdrawn from the chamber 2, as by a vacuum pump 5. Deaerated liquid is discharged from a sump 37 through an outlet 38, over which a strainer 39 may be placed. The innermost baffle plate 24 is detachably secured to a hub 21 by a bayonet connection 23, Fig. 3. Impeller blades 36 and a flange 34 prevent liquid from clmbing over the top of baffle plate 24. The remaining baffle plates are secured in grooves 22, as by welding or brazing. In a modified rotor construction, baffle plates 57, Fig. 4, are secured in grooves 56 in the spokes 52 of a spider 49 which is detachably mounted on a rotor plate 41 with the spokes 52 seating in radial grooves 46, Fig. 6. Annular grooves 48 align with the grooves 56 and receive the portions of baffle plates 57 lying between the spokes 52. As before, the innermost baffle plate has a bayonet connection with the rotor hub. Climbing of the liquid is prevented by a lip 61 and a conical deflector 62, but the means shown in Fig. 3 may be used instead. In a further modification, the rotor plate is eliminated, and the spider is secured to the rotor hub. In place of concentric plates, the baffle means may be of spiral form.
