Abstract

A liquid lubricating composition, particularly suitable for use in the lubrication of heavily loaded gears and of internal combustion engines of the aviation or Diesel type operating under severe conditions, comprises a major proportion of lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a stable oil-soluble metal ester salt of a polybasic cyclic acid other than a wax-substituted polybasic acid. The lubricating oil may be of mineral or synthetic origin and may be of hydrogenated or voltolized. The lubricating composition may contain additional ingredients such as corrosion inhibitors V.I. improvers, and ingredients which improve the oiliness, film strength, pour point, cold test or oxidation properties of the composition. A list of polybasic cyclic acids, from which the metal ester salts may be derived, is given and these acids include polycarboxylic acids of benzene, naphthalene, pyridine, pyrrole, quinoline, thiophene, thiazole, diphenyl, dibenzyl, anthracene, phenanthrene and thianthrene. A list of metals and metallic radicles from which the metal ester salts may be derived is also given. Suitable aromatic acids, from which the metal ester salts may be derived, may be prepared: (1) p by condensing an aromatic compound with (a) an aliphatic unsaturated acid, (b) a halogenated aliphatic acid, (c) a cycloaliphatic unsaturated acid, or (d) a halogenated cycloaliphatic acid; or (2) by condensing an aromatic acid with (A) an unsaturated aliphatic compound, (B) a halogenated aliphatic compound, (C) an unsaturated cycloaliphatic compound, or (D) a halogenated cycloaliphatic compound. Lists of these various types of substances are given. The halogen-bearing metal ester salts of aromatic polybasic acids are stated to be notably effective. Specific examples of suitable metal ester salts are the metal salts of the acid butyl ester of phthalic acid, such as magnesium, calcium, nickel, cobalt or aluminium butyl phthalate; metal salts of the acid amyl ester of phthalic acid; calcium, cobalt, nickel or stannous decyl phthalate; and calcium cobalt, nickel or stannous lauryl phthalate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to a lubricating composition comprising a major proportion of lubricating oil and a minor proportion of a salt of an aromatic or heterocyclic acid. Salts of organic bases and salts of phenols are mentioned and the various lists of salts and starting materials for the preparation of salts which appear in U.S.A. Specification 2,330,239 are included. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
