Abstract

668,418. Type-printing telegraphy. CREED & CO., Ltd. Aug. 4, 1950 [Aug. 12, 1949], No. 21014/49. Class 40 (iii). A printing telegraph system is modified for the transmission and printing of a script in which the letter characters are rationalized into a number of basic characters, which permit of equal character spacing, and further characters which are represented by qualifying symbols above or below the basic characters, and comprises means at the transmitter for transmitting the symbols separately from the characters and at the receiver means operable on receipt of any one of said symbols for preventing character spacing taking place between the symbol and the character it is intended to modify. In the application to the Arabic alphabet in which some of the basic characters are modified by one, two or three dots above the basic character whilst a few characters have one or two modifying dots below the character, the basic characters and characters with modifying dots underneath are allotted to separate key levers, whilst three key levers are allotted to the symbols, comprising one, two and three dots respectively, which are to be printed above a basic character. In the application to a receiver as described in Specification 228,842, [Class 40 (iii), in which a number of circular notched discs control the inward movement of a number of pivoted bell-cranks controlling printing or functional operations the discs 1 ... 5 are notched in relation to the bell cranks 7, 8, 9 controlling the printing of the respective symbols so that they are operated by the code combinations SSMMS, SSMSS, SSSMS respectively and the discs 3, 4 are provided with widened notches so that a lever 10 is also operated to prevent the spacing operation. The lever 10 is also operated in the event of the reception of the all-blank signal. Other code combinations having two initial space conditions may be employed for the vowel symbols. The twentyfour code combinations having a mark for one or both of the first two elements of a signal prevent the operation of the lever 10. If spacing takes place before the printing of a character the symbol is sent after the character, but if spacing takes place after the printing of a character, the symbol or accent is sent before the basic character. Specification 6,363,752 also is referred to.
