Abstract

667,934. Making sheathed electric conductors. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. June 2, 1950 [June 8, 1949], No. 13842/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Angular bending; mandrels.-In applying a strip to a core, e.g. armouring an electric cable with a corrugated metallic sheath, the core and the strip are fed axially in unison and in correct location and the strip is folded about the core by two belts which travel at the speed of the sheathing in helical paths about the core axis. The core 31 is fed through a guide 32 by a capstan device and travels through 22 forming stations together with a pre-corrugated strip 41 positioned by rolls 42. Each forming station comprises a plate 21 with adjustable pulleys 54, 59 which guide endless belts 45, 46 in a spiral path about the core. Adjustable abutment rollers 36 are secured to the plates which are anchored by bolts 24, 25. At station 2, Fig. 5, the strip 41 is positioned by rollers 70 under the core 31 and the belts are in the positions shown. At station 10, Fig. 8, the belt 45 has completed its bending operation and passes over a return pulley and the belt 46 continues to bend the strip which at station 22 has the form shown in Fig. 11 when the belt 46 passes over a return pulley. Peripheral rolls then regularize the sheath and guide it into a soldering device.
