667,700. Glass furnaces. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. Jan. 4, 1950 [Jan. 4, 1949; Dec. 24, 1949], No. 236/50. Class 56. [Also in Group XII] In a glass furnace of the type comprising a tank divided into at least two compartments by a barrier, the glass flowing either over the barrier in the form of a thin layer or through submerged orifices formed in the barrier, said barrier is made wholly or partly of carbon or graphite and the depth of immersion is adjustable. The embodiment shown in Fig. 1 includes a refractory wall 7 built into the furnace sole 1 and a floating block of carbon or graphite disposed between the wall 7 and refractory elements 9 built into the side walls of the furnace tank and provided with movable water-cooled U-tubes 11 by which the vertical position of the block is adjusted. A modification, Fig. 3, has walls 14, 15 defining with a floor 17 and the side walls of the furnace a tank 16 in which is disposed the graphite float 18 provided again with movable water-cooled U-tubes 21 for adjusting the level. A further modification, Fig. 8, shows the adjustable float 8 disposed between elements 9 and a vertically adjustable transverse element 24 of graphite with columns 26 movable through the sole whereby a passage of adjustable height is formed below the element 24 at sole level. Still further modifications show the combination of the transverse element 24 with a fixed transverse element or with two floating members adjusted to different levels respectively, whereby one or more submerged passages may be obtained. The graphite elements may act as resistors or electrodes thus assisting in the refining of the thin layer of glass as it passes over the weir.
