A load-handling device for gathering and subsequently dumping material comprises a bucket 10 which is hauled up a pair of tracks 5, 6 supported by pairs of brackets 7, 8 on a vehicle 1 by cables 14 of a winch 18. The bucket has rollers 11, 12 on each side which run respectively on the upper surface of the tracks 5, 6 and within channels formed in these tracks. When the empty bucket is hauled from its lowest position, Fig. 1, adjacent a pile of the material to be handled, it is first forced into the material so as to become charged and then drawn upwards along the tracks 5, 6. On reaching the top of the tracks, the rollers 12 contact rollers 33 on levers 31, pivoted at 32 so as to compress springs 35 on rods 34 connected to these levers until the bucket reaches the position 13. The bucket then contacts a buffer bar 21 extending between a pair of levers 20 pivotally mounted on the tracks 5, 6 so as to pivot these levers and tension springs 22. Eventually the bucket reaches its discharge position D, the levers 20 then abutting a fixed buffer bar 36. After the material has been discharged from the bucket 10, the winch driving means 2 is de-clutched from the shaft 3 supporting the winch barrels 18, and the levers 20 then, through the springs 22, operate to start the bucket on its return movement up over the ends 19 of the tracks 5, 6. When the bucket reaches its position B, the levers 31 through the springs 35 move the bucket on to the inclined portion of the tracks 5, 6 down which it returns by gravity to its lowermost position.
