Abstract

667,215. Loading and unloading rail-car containers: lift trucks. HODGES RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Aug. 22, 1949. [March 30, 1949] No. 21734/49. Classes 78 (iii) and 78 (iv). [Also in Group XXXII] A portable van unit and co-operating individual truck carrying means for use in a system in which the vans may be transported by railway flat cars or'the like, comprises a van situated on the rail car, holding means on the rail car against which the van may be engaged and powered lifting means having a tined fork element co-operating with the van for loading on to and off the rail car. The underside of each van 10 is formed with a recess 20 of cruciform shape adapted to engage a similarly shaped projection 21 on the platform of the rail car and the recess has a locking mechanism associated with it so that after the van is set in position on the projection 21 the lock can be actuated to secure the van on the rail car. The locking mechanism comprises pads 22 loosely pivoted to the longitudinal interior vertical faces of the recess 20 and is provided with wedges 24 adapted to press against the rear faces of the pads 22 when the bar 25 is moved axially by springs 40. Lugs 32 are secured to the bar 25 for engagement with the tines 30 of a fork lift truck, the tines being inserted in holes 31 in the base of each container so that initial linear movement of the tines within the holes 31 unlocks the bar 25 and leaves the van free to be raised from the rail car. Each tine 30 of the lift truck is fixed to a threaded hub member which cooperates with a vertical worm shaft 41 driven through gears 40 and clutches 43 from a power driven shaft 42 so that the tines can be raised or lowered either differentially or in unison. The frame 45 which supports the elevating mechanism is connected by a link 46A to a power driven lever 47 to enable the frame to be inclined fore or aft.
