Abstract

In a pianoforte action, the usual pin-and-bush pivots are replaced by knife-edge connections with the object of increasing the speed of operation. As shown, Figs. 1, 3, 5, a flange 27 secured to a rail 10 has wedge-shaped portions 30 on either side of a projecting portion 34 which extends through an opening 35 in a, wippen 12. The edges 31 of the wedge-shaped portions 30 engage the lowest points 32 of grooves 33 formed in the wippen 12 on either side of the opening 35. A leaf spring 40 passes through the wippen 12 below its upper surface 41 and through an opening in the flange 27, engaging the edge 37 of a wedge 36 in the opening and thereby holding the wippen 12 and flange 27 in engagement. The edges 31. and 37 are in alignment. A similar connection is provided between the wippen 12 and a jack 15, a single leaf spring 40 being used for both connections. Alternatively, two separate leaf springs may be used, and by slightly offsetting the two knifeedges 45, 49 on the jack 15, Fig. 7, the leaf spring 51 may be enabled to hold the jack 15 against the hammer butt so that the usual spring 28, Figs. 1, 3, 5, may be dispensed with. Other moving parts of the action may be pivoted in a similar fashion, and the action may. be constructed of metal or plastic.
