Abstract

666,444. Wet grinding. NORDELL, C. H. Sept. 2, 1949. [Nov. 9, 1948] No. 22815/49. Class 59. [Also in Group I] Lumps of solid matter carried by a stream of sewage in an influent channel are inter.- cepted as the stream flows to an effluent channel 3, Fig. 3, by a drum screen 5 associated with a transfer andcomminuting unit 81, 82, 89 disposed adjacent to the upstream surface of the screen 5 for removing solid matter and comminuting it away from the screen which is mounted on shaft 25 for relative rotation, as by motor 29 through reducing gears, with respect to the unit so that substantially the whole upstream surface of the screen is periodically swept by the unit. The comminuting unit comprises a rotatable cutting cylinder 81 rotated at a higher speed than screen 5 from the motor 29 by a driving shaft having a split coupling 75 therein which enables the unit 81, 82, 89 to be swung away from the screen 5 and out of the sewage, e.g., for inspection and repair. To this end a hand- or motor-driven worm 104 on a stationary part of the framework engages with the worm-wheel 105 secured to a member 95 on which the unit is rigidly mounted . An adjustable stop 109 carried on the member 95 positions the unit with respect to the screen 5. The rotary cutting cylinder consists of a stack of identical toothed discs 81, Fig. 7, mounted on a shaft and separated by spacers 88, Fig. 9. The discs 81 each have at least two internal notches 84, 85 asymmetrically disposed with respect to the teeth and adjacent discs are assembled on the shaft with different notches engaging a single key or spline 86, Fig. 9, so that the teeth are in staggered relationship. The cutting cylinder co-operates with a non-rotatable abutment 89, Figs. 8, 9, in the form of a comb interdigitated with the toothed discs. The peripheral surfaces of the spaces 88 may be roughened so as to sweep solids and particularly rags away from the screen 5 and wrap them around their own peripheries to be engaged by the cutting teeth 94 of the comb 89 and the screen bars 8 of the screen 5 and web members 7 supporting the annular bars 8 Specification 661,443 is referred to.
