Abstract
666,421. Rolling; rolling tubular articles; axial rolling; producing flow of metal by rubbing-tools. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. March 28, 1949 [March 31, 1948], No. 8372/49. Class 8 (iv). [Also in Group V] A method of cold-working a body of ductile material to reduce its thickness comprises producing relative movement between the work and a relatively small tool, such as a roller, in pressure contact therewith over a small area so as to cause plastic flow of the material along a line of contact and also causing a relative movement of the work and tool in a direction substantially perpendicular to the said line, the reduction in thickness being at least ten to one and being accomplished in a single pass in said perpendicular direction. In one form, a tubular work-piece 16 is fitted over the lower end of a mandrel 5 which may be rotated and by the manual operation of a handle 2 may be moved downwardly through a pass comprising three idle rolls, two of which, 11 and 12 (not shown), are fixed while the third roll 13 is adjustable by means of a screw 33 to alter the pass. All three rollers and the adjusting means are mounted in a floating frame 9. The rolls. may be one inch in diameter with a half-round bead or ridge 15 having a radius of 0.062 inches. The mandrel is driven at a speed of about 700 revolutions per minute and the wall thickness of the thinned portion of the work may be less than 0.001 inch. Fig. 13 shows a form of apparatus for reducing a flat sheet 53 mounted on a platen 55. A carriage 50 having rollers or wheels 51 moving in a groove 52 in a constraining member 54 carries a lower roll acting on the work. As the carriage is reciprocated over the work by a crank disc 56 the platen 55 is moved transversely so that the roll 51 traverses the work in a zig-zag path. In another form, Fig. 12, the work is reduced by a tool 65 of rodlike form with a rounded nose, which may be rotated about its axis. Lubricant may be supplied through an axial passage 66.
