666,363. Rolling. ARMCO INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. Sept. 9, 1949, No. 23431/49. Class 83 (iv). In apparatus for indicating and/or recording the amount of elongation of a strip of material during a rolling operation and having means responsive to the strip speed prior to passing, and after it has passed, through co-operating rolling members, a movable device, whose movement is dependent on the responsive means, measures the relative variation of such responses. A disc 23, driven by a Selsyn motor 9 electrically coupled to a Selsyn generator 8 driven by a guide roller 5 rotated by the strip material 3, and a disc 29, driven by a Selsyn motor 7 electrically coupled to a Selsyn generator 6 driven by a roller 4 rotated by the strip material 3, rotate a sphere 31 about an axis A-A when the entering and exit speeds of the strip 3 to and from the rolls 1 are equal. The sphere 31 is held in contact with the discs 23, 29, by a disc 35, journalled in a fork 34 of a lever freely rotatable about a pivot 33 arranged directly below the centre of sphere 31. Should the exit speed of strip 3 leaving rolls 1 increase, the speed of roller 5 will be increased, whereby the sphere 31 will be rotated about a new axis B-B, or C-C or D-D, and the disc 35, which takes up a position perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the sphere 31, will be moved and will indicate the amount of elongation of strip 3 passing through rolls 1. The percentage elongation is recorded on a paper strip 13, driven by Selsyn motor 11 electrically coupled to a Selsyn generator 10 rotated by roller 5, by a pen 39 attached to an arm 38 secured to the lever holding the disc 35, or in an alternative arrangement, Figs. 3-8 (not shown), visual indication of the percentage elongation may be shown on a dial by a pointer gear-driven from a toothed segment attached to the lever. Provision is made to indicate the elongation and hence the reduction of strip thickness on either side of a zero line, should the rollers 1 be operable in either direction.
