Abstract

An ultra-violet absorbing material comprises a transparent organic carrier capable of forming a film or foil and containing 4-benzoyl resorcinol in ultra-violet absorbing amount. The material may serve as a wrapping, e.g. for foods or the absorber may serve to prevent discoloration and deterioration of the carrier itself due to absorption of ultra-violet light. The carriers comprise plastics, resins, waxes and polishes, paints, enamels and varnishes and solutions of dopes or other film-forming substances. The 4-benzoyl resorcinol may be incorporated in the resin materials before polymerization or copolymerization of such monomers as ethylene, styrene, nitroethylene, furfurylethylene, vinyl chloride, tetrafluoroethylene, vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate, acrylic acid, a -substituted acrylic acids and their derivatives such as esters, amides, halides, or vinyl ketones. Resins such as polyvinyl resins, polyvinyl acetal or mixed resins such as polyvinyl formaldehyde acetaldehyde acetals containing the absorbing substance may be used as an intermediate layer in the lamination of safety glass. Other carriers are urea-, phenol-, or melamine-formaldehyde resins, modified phenolic resins, polystyrene, nylon, rubber chloride, cellulose derivatives and cellulose ethers. Specific examples are given in which the carriers are cellulose acetate-butyrate, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl butyral, polymethyl methacrylate, cellulose acetate and a mixture of carnauba wax and candelilla wax.ALSO:Textile materials are protected against deterioration by ultra-violet light by coating them with a composition comprising a transparent film-forming organic carrier containing 4-benzoyl resorcinol in ultra-violet absorbing amount. Suitable carriers are plastics, resins, and waxes. The 4-benzoyl resorcinol may be incorporated in resin materials before polymerization or co-polymerization of such monomers as ethylene, styrene, nitroethylene, furfurylethylene, vinyl chloride, tetrafluoroethylene, vinyl esters such as vinyl acetates, acrylic acid, a -substituted acrylic acids and their derivatives such as esters, amides, halides, or vinyl ketones. Resins such as polyvinyl resins, polyvinyl acetal or mixed resins such as polyvinyl formaldehyde-acetaldehyde acetals containing the absorbing substance may be used. Other carriers are urea-, phenol-, or melamine - formaldehyde resins, modified phenolic resins, polystyrene, nylon, rubber chloride, cellulose derivatives and cellulose ethers. Specific examples are given in which the carriers are cellulose acetate-butyrate, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl butyral, polymethyl methacrylate, cellulose acetate and a mixture of carnauba wax and candelilla wax.ALSO:An ultra-violet absorbing material comprises a transparent organic carrier capable of forming a film or foil and containing 4-benzoyl resorcinol in ultra-violet absorbing amount.
