[Also in Groups XXIII and XXVII] In an internal combustion engine the surface of the combustion chamber or the top surface of the piston 4, or both, is provided with a lining consisting of a mixture of sintered or fused quartz particles with metal particles, such as iron, so disposed therein that the outer surface of the lining consists entirely or mainly of quartz and the metal-contacting surface of the lining consists entirely or mainly of metal. The lining may therefore be brazed or soldered to the piston, Figs. 1-3 (not shown). As shown, the lining may be secured to the piston by a split ring 8, or in a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), by a dovetailed joint with a vitreous enamel bonding therebetween (see Group XXIII). Again the lining may be secured by bolts countersunk therein and extending through the piston or cylinder to receive a nut or by countersunk rivets the heads of which are covered by a protective coating or plug, Fig. 6 and 7 (not shown). The cylinder wall may have a lining inserted in a shoulder therein whilst the cylinder head is made entirely of protective material and the piston has an integral layer of such material thereon, Fig. 8 (not shown). The piston may be protected by threading a flanged disc therein with, if desired, a clearance therebetween which may communicate with the inside of the piston and the crank case, Fig. 9 (not shown). Grooves or passages may be formed in the underside of the lining to permit passage of coolant therethrough, Fig. 10 (not shown). In a further modification, Fig. 14 (not shown), only the part of the piston head against which the hot gases impinge is protected. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises further modifications wherein the piston head comprises alternate layers of non-metallic protective material and perforated sheets which are made of heat-resisting metal and are preferably staggered with respect to one another. The perforated sheets may be replaced by a lattice or net structure. The piston head may be provided with a composite lining comprising a porous inner layer of protective material such as porous graphite and an outer layer with a dense surface of the same material or another protective material such as quartz secured thereto by bonding or spraying. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
