Abstract

665,149. Making filters. STEVENS, A. H. (Purolater Products, Inc.). March 23, 1949, No. 7903/49. Drawings to Specification. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group I] Brazing.-A self-supporting filtering unit is formed from a thin narrow metal ribbon having spaced projections on one face by coating the ribbon with a fusible coating, winding the ribbon on edge into a helix so that the projections engage adjacent faces of the turns of the helix to provide interstices of definite width between adjacent turns of the helix, and permanently bonding the projections to the faces with which they engage. The bonding may be effected by heating the helically-wound ribbon to fuse the coating. The fusible coating may be of plastic material or of metal, such as copper, and in the latter case may be applied electrolytically to the ribbon. Alternatively the wire (e.g. iron, steel or copper-nickel alloy) from which the ribbon is made, may be coated with copper prior to its formation into ribbon. In a further method the fusible coating is applied to the ribbon after the latter has been wound into helical form. Prior to the heating step the ribbon is wound on edge round a heatresisting drum and the turns pressed against each other by end supports or clamps. The whole is introduced into a brazing oven and the temperature raised to 2040‹ to 2080‹ F. (when the coating is copper) in an atmosphere of hydrogen. Alternatively the projections may be resistance welded or projection welded to the adjacent faces. Thereafter the drum is removed. The wire may be formed into ribbon with the projections on a wider face and with a predetermined curvature in the width plane by the method described in Specification 385,755, and the drum on which it is wound temporarily may be rotated and moved axially during the winding. The finished unit may be incorporated in a number of filters intended for filtering oil (see Group I).
