Abstract

664,722. Directive radio systems. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. July 1, 1949 [July 6, 1948], No. 17466/49. Class 40 (vii). In a marine radar system which scans the surroundings of a vessel and indicates the position of reflecting objects on a position indicator, obstacles, such as the foremast of the vessel, may obstruct the view of the radar in certain directions. To avoid this the invention uses two scanning aerial systems mounted one on each side of the vessel, connected in parallel electrically, having their maximum sensitivities in the same direction, and scanned in synchronism. The aerial systems may each comprise an antenna backed by a reflector and arranged to scan by physical movement about a vertical axis or they may comprise fixed arrays the directivity of which is varied by varying the phase shifts in the feeders to the elements of the array or the frequency of the applied signal. For a 3 to 10 cm. transmission wavelength an aerial system separation of 10 metres is suggested.
