Abstract

663,664. Radio diversity receivers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Oct. 11, 1949 [March 3, 1949], No. 5898/49. Class 40 (v). In a radio receiving system having a plurality of aerials, the best signal outputs for upper sideband, lower sideband, and carrier frequency are individually provided by selective means operating in accordance with normal diversity reception practice, and automatic means are provided to supply either the selected carrier output, or if this should drop below a predetermined level, oscillations from a local generator of carrier frequency, to the demodulators associated with each of the selected upper and lower sidebands. In the Figure, signals from aerial A1 after amplification and frequency conversion in frequency changer IFC1 and again in frequency changer 2FC1 are separated into upper sideband, lower sideband and carrier frequency portions respectively by filters USB1, LSB1 and CF1. Similar treatment is applied to signals from aerial A2, and in each case the strongest of the two signals is selected as in diversity reception by upper sideband selector SBS1, lower sideband selector SBS2 and carrier selector CS. The upper sideband output is applied to detector D and the lower sideband output to detector D2. If the selected carrier output is above a predetermined level, this output is supplied to detectors D1 and D2 via switch RS, but if the output is below this level, switch RS operates to connect a local oscillator CLO which is then used to supply carrier frequency oscillations to detectors D1 and D2. The operation of switch RS is controlled by a voltage derived from an automatic gain control circuit AGC which is jointly responsive to the two carrier frequency outputs. Alternatively, by means of switch SW, the switch RS may be manually operated so that the local oscillator is used continuously in place of the received carrier oscillations. An automatic frequency control circuit is used to control the frequency of the second heterodyne oscillator 2LO.
