Abstract
663,589. Magnetic compasses. REECE CORPORATION. July 5,1949, No. 17754/49. Class 97 (ii). A magnetic compass comprises a support 10, a magnet element 30, 31 and an eddy-current damping element 15, 16, 17, the magnet element being pivotally mounted by bearings 48 on spindle 18 for free rotation relatively to the support 10 and the damping element being pivotally mounted by bearings 24 for free rotation relatively to both the support and the magnet element. Preferably the magnet element and damping element. pivot axes are coaxial, being constituted, as shown, by a single spindle 18. A limited amount of clearance may be provided between the bearings 24, 48 respectively, and the spindle 18. Another embodiment is described suitable for aircraft and having a side-reading compass-card. In both embodiments the freedom of movement about the pivot axis and the inertia of the damping element is such as to resist the tendency for the damping element to rotate in space and thereby to prevent the tendency for the magnetic elements to be moved away from their normal position by oscillatory movements of the damping element.
