Abstract

663,339. Television. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 4, 1949 [Dec. 11, 1948], No. 25454/49. Class 40 (iii). [Also in Group XX] A television pick-up tube feeding a cathoderay tube receiver through a channel having adjustable non-linear characteristics is employed with X-ray apparatus to produce a representation of the X-ray picture having an increased contrast between predetermined portions thereof. The X-ray image of a body 1 is produced by projection of X-rays from a source 2 on to the fluorescent screen 3 of an image intensifier 4. The intensified but reduced image appearing on the viewing phosphor 5 is projected on to the photo-sensitive screen of a television pick-up tube 6, such as an image orthicon, and the output signal derived by scanning the screen passed to a cathode-ray tube 7 through a channel comprising a linear amplifier 8 and non-linear amplifier 9. Amplifier 9 has a characteristic, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), with a linear portion extending over a limited range of input voltages below which no output is produced for application to tube 7 and above which saturation occurs, producing only a limited change in output voltage level for a large change in input voltage. The gain of amplifier 8 and the bias of amplifier 9 are made adjustable whereby signals between selected levels only, corresponding to details of the X-ray image between predetermined intensities, are made effective to produce a fully contrasting picture on the screen of tube 7.
