Abstract
662,782. Vehicle bonnets. VAUXHALL MOTORS, Ltd. Jan. 13, 1950 [Feb. 16, 1949], No. 4220/49. Class 79(iii) [Also in Group XXV] A motor vehicle bonnet is arranged so that it can be opened at either side about alternative longitudinal axes, the bonnet having latch keepers and being latched at each side by a pair of aligned open-jaw latches, arranged so that when a latch is closed or locked it forms part of the hinge. Preferably the latches on either side are releasable simultaneously from within the vehicle. Fig. 2 shows a bonnet top B with similar latches and hinges at each side. On the left hand side the bonnet is fastened by latch 5 to the hinge member 1 pivoted at 2, whereas on the right the bonnet is unlatched from its hinge member 1. Fig. 5 shows a hinge, which comprises a pair of arcuate levers 1 pivoted at 2 within a hollow bracket 3 recessed into the mudguard panel S. The two levers 1 are held spaced apart at one end by the hinge pin 2, intermediate their ends by a bracket 17 carrying a rubber buffer 15 and at their other end by brackets carrying the latch machanism. The bonnet in its closed position rests on the rubber buffers 15. In Figs. 3 and 4, which show the bonnet in latched and unlatched positions respectively, a pivoted open-jaw latch-receiving member 4 is urged by spring 6 into the latch receiving position shown in Fig. 4. The latch consists of an L-shaped member 5 depending from the bonnet top. As the bonnet descends to closing position, the horizontal arm of latch 5 engages the slot in rotary member 4 and rotates the latter to the position shown in Fig. 3, whereupon the detent 7 is spring urged into the notch 8 to lock member 4. The lock is released by a pull on cable 11. A locating pin 12 is carried by the hinge member 1, which cooperates with a socket 14 on the bonnet B. A spring 13 surrounding the locating pin serves to cushion the bonnet when it is being closed and also initiates the opening movement when the latch is unlocked.
