Abstract

662,685. Sorting photo-electrically STEVENS, A. H. (Electric Sorting Machine Co.). May 25, 1949, No. 13967/49. Class 40 (iii). Images of articles to be sorted photo-electrically are projected into a plane between the article and the photo-cell and a scanning device in this plane exposes the cell to successive portions of the image. As shown, almonds for example are lifted one at a time from a supply 34 by suction tubes 13 carried on the periphery of a wheel 12. Part of the periphery of this wheel passes through an illuminated chamber 14 in which the almond is compared with the background of a replaceable plate 33 (Fig. 3). Light reflected from the face 31 of the beam passes through a lens system 15 (which may be an achromatic combination) and is brought to a focus at the optical centre of a further lens combination 17, 18. The purpose of this combination is to defocus the light from the bean on to the photo-cell so that irregularities of photo-cell sensitivity are ineffective. At the optical centre of this lens combination is situated a scanning plate 16 having near its edge holes 44 so that as the almond is traversed horizontally the hole examines successive vertical bands, the disc rotating at such a speed that the bands overlap. To prevent the cell receiving pulses as a result of receiving light first from one aperture and then two, bars 47, 48 are provided which are relatively angularly adjustable, the top bar being friction held and the lower screw adjusted so that as one aperture enters the space between the bars the other leaves it and the photo-cell is always receiving light from an area equal to that of one aperture. Almonds in which one spot differs in colour from the rest or which differ in colour from the background are rejected by a pusher 21 into a trough 23. Good almonds enter a trough 25. The scanning disc may be replaced by a reciprocating plate or a mirror drum, Figs. 13 and 14 (not shown). Examples of suitable ejector control mechanism are given in U.S.A. Specifications 2,131,095, 2,152,758, 2,325,665, and 2,244,826.
