Abstract

662,532. Automatic control systems for stabilizing polyphase supplies. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 25, 1947, No. 19999/47. Class 38 (iv). A three-phase voltage supply is stabilized so that inequalities in magnitude and phase separation of the voltage between phases, taken cyclically, are substantially anulled. The input 1, 2, 3, Fig. 1, is connected to the output 13, 14, 15 by three, star-connected, variable auto-transformers 4. 5, 6, the movable contacts of which are driven by reversible splitfield motors 10, 11, 12, respectively. The motors may be provided with built-in generators so connected as to prevent hunting. The two field windings of motor 10 are connected to the anodes of a push-pull pair of triodes 22, 23. The bias voltage on the grid of valve 22 is stabilized by a neon stabilizer 25 ; the bias on valve 23 is the resultant of the voltages across resistors 28, 29. These voltages, supplied by rectifying and smoothing devices 30, 31, are proportional to the voltages between phases 13, 14 and 13, 15, respectively. Hence transformer 4 is adjusted to maintain these phase voltages equal in magnitude. Transformers 5 and 6 are similarly controlled so that the voltages between phases are all equal and hence have equal phase displacements one from the other. The three potential transformers 33, 34, 41, may be replaced by a single 3-limb transformer. The regulators 4, 5, 6 may be replaced by tapped transformers, induction regulators or saturable reactors. In a modification, Fig. 3, each rectifying device 30, 31, 40 has applied to it the vector sum of the voltages between the corresponding phase and the other two phases by means of a single 3-limb transformer having a deltaconnected primary 47, 48, 49, and three two-phase secondaries 50, 53, 54. In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the three regulating auto-transformers are connected in delta. Specification 421,546, [Group XL], is referred to.
