661,425. Photo electric absorptiometers. EDISON SWAN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and POCOCK, S. N. Feb. 27, 1950 [May 16, 1949], No. 13003/49. Class 40 (iii). In a photo-electric absorptiometer in which beams of light pass alternately to a photo-cell or cells through the substance under test and a standard, the cell output voltages being compared, the shutter which alternately obscures and passes each beam closes a switch to connect the cell output to a voltage comparator only when the cell is fully illuminated or obscured. As shown, a shutter 14 oscillating in the path of the beams of light from source 1 through the standard and test solutions 5 cuts each off in turn. The photo-cell output as each beam falls alternately on its cathode 8 is amplified at 10 and fed to a circuit comprising condenser 12 and meter 13. When one beam is totally obscured, shutter 14 engages a fixed contact to charge a condenser 12 in accordance with the photo-cell output peak. When the other beam is obscured the condenser is connected in series with the meter to the photo-cell output and if this latter is uncharged the meter shows no deflection. If not a calibrated optical wedge 6 may be adjusted, the position of this wedge indicating the density of the test solution. The two outputs may be compared on a cathode-ray tube. Separate beams and photo-cells may be used.
