Abstract

661,102. Supply meters. SMITH METERS, Ltd., and CHARLES, J. A. May 27, 1949, No. 14387/48. Class 37. [Also in Group XIX] Apparatus of the periodic counter type associated with an electricity meter for providing a graphical record of consumption rate, has an independent constant speed mechanism for both advancing the record surface and periodically interrupting the meter drive to the marking stylus adjustment elements. A meter driven spindle 13 has its lower bearing in a spring-actuated lever 27 pivoted at 28, and carries a pinion 26 normally meshing with a wheel 18 which it drives (counterclockwise, Fig. 4) from an initial position determined by the engagement of a pin 21 on the wheel with a stop 22. A crankarm 51, constantly rotated by a clockwork 35, periodically (at five minute intervals) engages the tail of lever 27 to disengage the pinion momentarily, the wheel 18 then returning to its initial position under the action of a spring 20. The successive displacements of the wheel 18 are a measure of the consumption rate and are registered by a ratchet wheel 23; this wheel is carried forward by the wheel 18 through contacting pins 24, 25 and then held, during the ensuing period, by a pawl 31. At the end of each period the crank-arm 51, immediately prior to tripping the pinion lever 27, disengages the pawl 31 so that the ratchet wheel 23 is moved back by a return spring to the position in which the pins 24, 25 abut when there has been a drop in consumption. The ratchet wheel 23 is connected through a pinion 30 and a gear sector 33 with the pivot spindle 34 of a recording stylus 76 which marks a record sheet passing over a drum 54 also driven by the clockwork 35. A continuous record of consumption rate, averaged over short periods, is thus marked on the record sheet.
