Abstract
661,006. Net-making. ACKERMAN, J. H. Oct. 11, 1949 [Aug. 12, 1948], No. 21298/48. Class 74 (i). A net-making machine, of the type having a horizontal row of needles 5, a corresponding row of hooks 3 axially opposed to the needles and a row of vertical sinkers or fallers 6 with hooked heads beneath the needle heads, has one or more shafts driven by a power source and located towards the front of the machine and below the row of needles and row of hooks, which shaft or shafts rotate cams coupled through linkage to the knotforming mechanism and a single wire shuttle guided and driven to move from one side of the machine to the other when the knot loops are open, which shuttle is released, to move through the loops, by a cam - controlled mechanism driven by the power source, cam controlled means driven by the power source for placing the thread end from the bobbin in a slot in the free or head end of the shuttle, cam controlled means for severing the thread adjacent the bobbin after the return of the shuttle with the thread, cam controlled means for gripping and holding the two thread ends after severance of the thread, the said shaft or shafts cams and shuttle drive being powered by the said source through a clutch having a handcontrolling member extending across the front of the machine. A main cam-shaft 11 is driven by an electric motor 9, through shaft 10, clutch 13, and gearing 12. Layshafts 26, 45 are driven at half the speed of shaft 11, through, respectively, gearing 27 and chains and chain wheels 46, 47. The bar 4 bearing the hooks 3 is moved in and out and up and down by cams on shaft 11 and is shogged by a cam on layshaft 26. The chopper bar 8 is operated by a cam on shaft 11. The steel wire shuttle 34 is reciprocated by a cam on shaft 11 and opposing weight 76, chain 37, and endless driving wire 74 passing around pulleys 75. The fallers 6 are operated by cams on shaft 11. A carriage which knocks the fallers from the slur bar is moved to and fro by a gear train 43 (swung, to reverse the motion of the carriage, by a cam 44 on shaft 11) and an endless chain or wire 77, passing around pulley 78. A clip 63, which holds the twine from spool 49 whilst it is being wrapped around the shuttle end, is operated by cam 64, on shaft 45, and linkage 79. A twine disc 52, having an eccentric hole 51 through which the twine passes and a central hole 53 to receive the shuttle end, is rotated, to hand the twine to the clip 63 and then to wrap it around the end of the shuttle and into a slot therein, by shaft 45, acting through gearing 54, cam 55 and rack and pinion 56, 57. Clips holding up the ends of the weft, are opened and lowered by cams on shaft 45. Weft removing knives 65 are operated by a cam on shaft 45. A forked rod 67, for removing waste matter from the shuttle is operated by a cam 68. A springy wire to clear used waste from the machine is mounted on the hook bar. The take-up arm 2 may be rotated by ratchet and pawl 71, linkage 72 and cam 73.
