Abstract

659,599. Vehicle suspension. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd. Aug. 18, 1949, No. 21489. Convention date, Aug. 20, 1948 [Class 108(ii)] In a vehicle having a pair of road wheels independently sprung by means of suspension members pivoted at their inner ends to the frame, a stabilizer bar extends transversely between and is supported solely by the suspension members, independently of the frame. Figs. 1 and 2 show in plan and front elevation the stabilizer bar 24 applied to an orthodox suspension. The frame cross-member 15 has pivoted thereto upper and lower arms 20, 19 carrying steering knuckles 21, the suspension comprising coil springs 23. The lower arms 19 are generally A- shaped and have a channel cross section. The stabilizer bar has a straight central portion 24 and rearwardly inclined ends 25, 26 which are mounted in bearings 27 carried by the arms 19. The bearings are conveniently of rubber clamped in the channel section as shown in Fig. 3, by clamping plates 28 and bolts 29. With this construction the ends of the stabilizer bar may be left unmachined after its heat treatment. In a modified shape of stabilizer bar, Fig. 9, the straight central portion 34 is larger and its ends are attached at 35 to pivoted bars between the bearings 27. In a further modification, Fig. 10, the straight portion 36 projects forwardly and is joined to the diagonal end portions by straight lengths 37, 38. In a further modification, Fig. 12, the straight portion 41 is disposed forwardly and two of the bearings 40 also project from the suspension member.
