Abstract

659,333. Drying paper webs. GAMBLE, H. April 12, 1949, No. 9848. [Class 34(i)] A coated paper web 1 passes over lamps 2 arranged in boxes 3, 4 on one or both sides of the web, at least one of the boxes being hinged so as to be movable in and out of the operating position. Where two boxes are employed they are connected together by pivots 5, 6 and opening levers 7 on each side of the lower box comprise a toothed quadrant 9 rotatable about the pivot 6 engaging a similar toothed quadrant 8 rotatable about the pivot 5, the levers 7 carrying a counterweight 10. Manipulation of the levers 7 causes both boxes to move about their pivots and the counterweights are so disposed that the boxes will stay in any adjusted position. When it is only desired to use lamps on one side of the paper a polished aluminium plate is placed beneath the paper, instead of the second box, to reflect the heat, the lower surface of the plate being insulated.
