Abstract
659,161. Seaming sheet material. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. June 1, 1949, No. 14710. Convention date, June 14, 1948. [Class 42 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In a welding machine with an intermittently fed work carrier and a device for feeding fusible rod, a heating element is reciprocated normal to and parallel to the plane of the work carrier transversely to the direction of movement of the work. The machine may be adapted for low temperature fusible materials such as plastic resins. The work is fed by an endless belt 10 supported on rollers 12, 13 and driven through an adjustable throw ratchet device 22 from an electric motor driven shaft 30 and connecting rod 21. The rod feeding device 105 and a burner 11 are both mounted on a carrier 63, Fig. 3, comprising rods 71 bolted between end pieces 75, 76 and horizontally slidable on rods 61, 62, Fig. 1, which are in turn bolted to end plates 43, 44, vertically slidable on members 35, 35a mounted on the machine frame. The end plates 43, 44 are vertically adjustable for presetting the height of the rod and burner above the work by screwed rods 45, 46 attached to the end plates and passing through a horizontal member 40 bolted to the tops of the vertical members 35, 35a and raised or lowered by rotation of nuts 48, 49 by worms 51, and a manuallyrotated shaft. Transverse reciprocation of the burner 11 is obtained by means of a push-rod 120 attached to the carriage 63 passing through the end plate 44 to a bracket 124 which is reciprocated by a cam 125 on a shaft 123 driven through bevel gears 138, 139 from the shaft 30. The bracket 124 is held against the cam face by compression springs 128, 129a. Vertical reciprocation of the burner 11 is obtained through a cam 79 on a shaft 78 rotating in the frame 63 and actuating a push-rod 88 to which a fixture 89 carrying the burner is attached by means of a bolt 97 and which slides against the action of a spring 86 in a bracket 85 attached to the rods 70 and 71 (not shown), by U-bolts. The burner 11 is longitudinally adjustable in the fixture 89 by means of a knurled nut 94 and may be tilted by loosening a butterfly nut 96 on the bolt 97. The shaft 78 on the carrier 63 is rotated through bevel gears 133, 135 and a coupling 77 by the shaft 123 which is splined to permit vertical movement of the bevel gear 133 carried by a bracket 130 attached to the end plate 44, of the carrier 63. The coupling 77 permits relative longitudinal reciprocating movement between the shaft 78 and the shaft 64 carrying the bevel gear 135. The welding rod 106 is fed from a reel 107 mounted by a bracket 113 on the machine frame -and is intermittently fed to the work between rollers in the feeding device 105 actuated by a ratchet which receives reciprocatory motion from an eccentric 100 on the shaft 78 through a push-rod 101. Operation. While close to the work the burner reciprocates sideways across the space between the edges of the work and a portion of the rod is melted and dropped into the space. The burner then rises away from the work while the work advances on the belt 10 and a further length of rod 106 is fed toward the work. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the replacement of the burners by heating elements using superheated steam or other heated gases or by a heat wave radiating device or high frequency electrical heating equipment when welding material on which an open flame would have a deleterious effect. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
