Abstract

An organic nitrogenous base containing at least one basic nitrogen group, for use in aqueous solution as a primer for a solid to be coated with a bituminous material containing an oleophilic organic acid to produce a composition resistant to the action of water (see Group V), is obtained by hydrogenating a polyamino condensation product of an unsaturated aldehyde such as acrolein or its homologues with ammonia or an amine. In an example, 22 parts by weight of acrolein are mixed at - 60 DEG to - 70 DEG C. with 90 parts of anhydrous liquid ammonia, and the excess ammonia is allowed to evaporate. The residue is dispersed in alcohol, 5 parts of Raney nickel catalyst are added, and the mixture is treated for an hour with hydrogen under a pressure of 1000 lbs. per square inch at 100 DEG C., low-boiling material being subsequently removed under reduced pressure.ALSO:A bituminous composition resistant to the action of water, is made by priming a solid, such as wood, cement, glass, metal, or mineral aggregate for road making, either basic such as limestone, neutral, or acidic such as granite or rhyolite, with an aqueous solution or dispersion of an organic nitrogenous base and then applying a coat of a bituminous material containing an oleophilic organic acid, so as to form in situ a reaction product at the interface between the solid and the bitumen. The bitumen may be a pyrogenous or an air-blown bitumen, or a naturally-occurring asphalt or asphaltite. The oleophilic organic acid is preferably a fatty acid having at least 12 C atoms in the alkyl group directly attached to the carboxyl group, e.g. stearic, polymeric oleic, linoleic, or linolenic acids or mixtures thereof obtained by the hydrolysis of fats or oils such as linseed or soyabean oil; alternatively, naphthenic acids of a molecular weight above 220 can be used. The acid is present in an amount between 0.2 and 2.0 per cent of the bituminous material. The base must have at least one basic nitrogen group, e.g. amines, especially polyamines such as triethylene tetramine, heterocyclic bases such as pyridine and its homologues, water-dispersible proteins such as egg albumin, casein, pectin, or gelatine, or a hydrogenated polyamino condensation product of an unsaturated aldehyde such as acrolein or its homologues with ammonia or an amine (see Group IV (b)). The base is used as a 0.01-0.1 molar solution which is applied to the solid in an amount equal to 1-5 per cent.
