[Classes 31 (i) and 42 (i)] In a machine for producing a bead at the free edge of a rubber article (e.g. a glove) on a former, the former is moved through a part of a circle and at the same time is rotated about its axis and during such combination of movements is acted upon in turn by a cutting device and rotating stripping and beading rollers, the cutting device producing a continuous cut around the periphery of the article, the stripping roller removing unwanted rubber from the neighbourhood of the cut and the beading roller rolling up the free edge of the article to form a bead. As shown, Fig. 2, formers 9 are mounted on six carriers 2 spaced around a table 1 and are caused to rotate about their own axes, as the table revolves by engagement of a pinion 24, Fig. 5, at the foot of the vertical shaft 11 of each corner, with a stationary gear wheel 25. When a carrier 2 is over the section 31b of a fixed cam 31, it is raised by engagement of the cam 31 with the bottom of shaft 11 so that pinion 24 is disengaged from the stationary gear 25, thus stopping rotation of the carrier on its own axis. At this point a former 9 carrying a glove is fixed on to the carrier 2 by means of a clip 20. The carrier is lowered as it passes over the cam section 31a, to bring pinion 24 into engagement with gear 25 and start the former 9 rotating about its own axis. In the lowered position, clip 20 lies within a cup 23, thus preventing removal of the former from its carrier. The former is then brought into contact with a cutting disc 43 on an arm 66 pivoted on a plate 56, the advance of the former forcing the arm 66 away from a stop 73 against the action of a weight 67, Fig. 5, attached to the arm by a cord 68. Disc 43, cuts a continuous line around the periphery of the wrist portion of the glove 10. The height of the cut can be varied by adjusting plate 56 vertically on supporting studs 75. The former is then carried into engagement with a driven, fabric-covered, stripping roller 44, Fig. 2, mounted on weighted bell-crank levers so as to press heavily against the former . at or just below the cut. Roller 44, which is inclined slightly downwards in the direction of movement of the former, tears and strips the unwanted rubber below the line of cutting. The former is now brought into contact with a beading roller 45, similar to roller 44 and similarly mounted but oppositely inclined, which engages the glove wrist and rolls up the rubber from the cut edge to form a bead ; if necessary, the lower part of the glove may be treated with rubber solution prior to beading. The former is finally raised as it rides up the cam section 31c, and when it is over section 31b it can be unclipped from the carrier and replaced by another former and glove. According to the Provisional Specification, the direction of rotation of the former may be changed between the stripping and beading rollers so that there is a considerable relative horizontal movement between the glove and the stripping roller, but not such movement between the glove and the beading roller, a simple rolling movement being obtained ; also, the formers may be fed to and from the table by a conveyer instead of by hand.
