Abstract

A calcined porous rocky basic material, e.g. limestone or dolomite is impregnated with one or more alkaline metal compounds, e.g. potassium or sodium compounds, and used to deoxidize and to remove sulphur and phosphorus from metal, especially steel. The pieces of the rocky material are preferably 30-80mm in diameter. They may also be used coated with hydrocarbons, or with other substances used in the manufacture of steel, such as pieces of calcined limestone impregnated with hydrocarbons, e.g. pitch or bitumen.
