[Class 42 (i)] [Also in Group XI] Sheets of thermoplastic material are joined together by passing an electric heating current through a metal wire, strip or sheet that is pressed against the sheets of thermoplastic material until they soften and weld together along the area defined by the metal wire, strip or sheet. In Fig. 1, an apparatus for carrying out the above process includes a table top 10 over which is pivoted an elongated metal strip 16 which may be raised by depressing a foot pedal 21. The strip 16 may be the heating resistor or it may support a nickel or other spring-tensioned heating wire 24, Fig. 3, of square, circular or other cross-section, extending along its lower face. The strip 16 may be bent to a desired shape. The table top 10 may have a felt-lined groove in which is a co-operating, spring-tensioned, heating element in a fibre glass sheath. Another embodiment, Fig. 6, for spot-welding plastic sheets together, comprises an insulating rod 63 mounted in a vertically movable frame 52 operated by a lever 57. A nietal disc 66, Fig. 7, is secured to the lower face of the rod 63 and current is supplied by one conductor 68 to diametrically opposite points 69 and 70 on the disc and by a second conductor 72 to diametrically opposite points 73 and 74, the points being uniformly spaced as shown. Copper slugs 76 surround the supply conductors where they are joined to the disc to prevent overheating at these points. The apparatus may be used to weld an air valve having a cylindrical tubular part and a flattened base of plastic material to a sheet of the same material. The metal disc 66 may be replaced by an annular disc supported on, and insulated from, an iron core on which a primary winding is wound, the annular disc constituting a short-circuited turn on the core. An alternative construction is shown in Fig. 8 wherein a rectangular strip of nickel 80 is bent round the lower end of a rectangular insulator 81 as shown, and copper blocks 85 and 86 are secured to the vertical arms of the nickel strip for cooling purposes, current being supplied to the strip by leads 83 and 84 so that the lower face of the nickel strip may form the welding surface. In all cases, the electrical circuits preferably include an electronic timer 33, Fig. 1, so that the current may be automatically switched off after a predetermined time.
