Abstract

657,572. Control systems for resistance heating. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and SHALLCROSS, H. Dec. 9, 1948, No. 31911. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups XI and XXII] An electricity supply system for a machine for soldering armature conductors to commutator segments (see Group XXII) supplies an interrupted alternating current to soldering electrodes 31, 30 (see Group XI), an interrupted direct-current to a solenoid or rotator 57 adapted to rotate the armature 10, and a directcurrent to a solenoid 35 adapted to apply the electrode 31 to the field conductors. A heating tower 50 includes three similar circuits which serve to control adjustably the overall time for each soldering operation on a group of conductors, the duration of each pulse and the interval between the pulses of the alternating- current supplied from supply 53 through a contactor 52 and a transformer 54 to the electrodes 30, 31. The circuits, which may be fed from a direct-current supply 55, comprise a condenser charged through a resistance and connected to a gas-filled discharge-tube which causes a relay to operate when the charge on the condenser reaches a predetermined value. The value of the condenser or the charging resistance is adjustable either in steps or continuously to adjust the delay of the timing circuit. The first circuit, which controls the overall time for each operation, also operates the solenoid 35 and is closed at the same time as the second circuit controlling the duration of each pulse. When the second circuit is closed, the third circuit for controlling the interval between the pulses is opened, and when this circuit closes the second circuit again opens. This is repeated until the first circuit opens at the end of said overall time. The pulses of direct-current transmitted to the rotator 57 from a rotation-control tower 51 are produced by a circuit including a gas-filled relay tube, the number of pulses being controlled by a similar circuit. A foot-control 56 connected direct to the solenoid 35, rotator 57 and contactor 52 may be used instead of the automatically-controlled heating tower 50 and rotation control tower 51. Specification 549,503 is referred to.
