Abstract
657,188. Vehicle suspension. CONLEY. J. T., and TRUE, O. D. Feb. 9, 1949, No. 3574. [Class 108(ii)] In a trailer dolly the caster wheel mounting is carried by a vertical cylindrical member, which telescopes and swivels within a vertical mounting member, a shock-absorbing helical spring being disposed within the cylindrical member with one end bearing on such member and its other end abutting an independent and adjustable piston carried by the mounting member. By adjusting the piston the spring compression may be varied and/or the height of thedolly altered. Such adjustment may be ejected manually or hydraulically. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, one or a pair of caster wheels w are mounted in a yoke comprising legs 10a and an angle bolster 10 to which is fixed a vertical cylindrical switch sleeve 9.The sleeve 9 is rotatably and slidably carried by the mounting sleeve 6 which is fixed to the plate 5 secured to the draw bar and is further fixed by a U-bolt 7 secured to a channel member 8 fast with the draw bar. The sleeve 9 slides over piston 12 which is vertically adjustable by screwed rod 13 and handle 13a, a locking nut 14 being provided. The shock absorbing spring. 11 is located between the piston and the bottom of sleeve 9. By adjusting the height of piston 12 the proportion of the trailer load carried by the dolly whilst towing can be varied. When the trailer is unhitched, adjustment of piston 12 raises or lowers the draw bar. The space beneath the piston 12 may be filled with fluid and the piston provided with holes 12a, whereby a hydraulic damping effect is achieved. In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the piston 22 may be raised or lowered by a hydraulic ram 27, hydraulic pressure being supplied through pipe 26 from a pump or master cylinder. The piston may be retained in the desired position by closing valve 25a and tightening a clamping ring 28 on to the ram 27. In both forms means are provided to prevent the sleeve 9 dropping out of its mounting sleeve, comprising a spring loaded detent 15, Fig. 2, which engages an annular shoulder 9a on the sleeve 9 upon excessive longitudinal movement thereof.
